Mell Colly was found dead in his library. His forehead was resting on the keys of his tape recorder and a pool of blood lay on the desk beside him. From the door, Shadow could see that Mel's right hand covered the gun and that a bullet had entered his right temple. Shadow removed the tape recorder from under Mel's head and pressed the play button. A voice said, "This is Mel Colly speaking. I am not going to go on with a long-winded farewell. I'm tired of life and all its anguish. I'll see you all on the other side, wherever that may be."
There was a gunshot and the sound of his head hitting the tape recorder keys, followed by a click indicating the recorder had been shut off. Shadow was certain that someone else had imitated Mel's voice and made this recording to sound like a suicide.

Day 1 - If his head hit the keys of the recorder. I don't think you can turn the unit off , if the other keys are down. So someone had to turn the unit off.
Day 1 - OR ! Since there was blood on the side of the recorder , someone one had to put his head on top of the recorder
Day 2 - OK! this head hit the keys, but it didn't hit the off key
Day 3 - Mel had to be right handed , his hand was on the gun. So he could not turn off the unit.
Day 4 - OK! Here we go again. He was dead when his head hit the unit
Cherise finally gives Bob a hint: What does Mel say right off the bat...take it from the BEGINNING
Day 5 - He said his name, But ! Some people say that went they kill them self.....So , I know you can only go by what your book tells you. Well sometime you have to go with your gut and I could be right also

Day 6 - WELL! BEFORE TOUCHING THE BODY . HE SHOULD CALL ( CSI IN LAS VEGAS )..BOB

Murder was suspected because the tape was rewound. Shadow heard the click of the off button when Mel's head supossedly hit the recorder's keys. Therefore, Shadow should have had to rewind the tape to hear Mel's message. Instead, Shadow hit the play button and the message began. Obviously, the killer listened to the recording to be sure it sounded authentic and then made the mistake of rewinding the tape.
